Eating God’s Words

Do you have trouble staying spiritually full? At times, if we are completely honest with ourselves, we all do. The discipline of Bible intake really takes determination because we do not always wake up feeling excited about reading the Bible. It is a constant battle all of us face as we wake up to new mercies each and every day.

However, I want to submit to you that the most important diet you will ever need in your life is the bread of life from the Word of God. Jesus said that whoever comes to him will never go hungry (John 6:35). God’s Word should never be an option to you if you are his child. You cannot claim to know God and not love his Word. John writes something similar in his first epistle: “If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth” (1 John 1:6).

You see, the Bible is the means God has ordained for us to grow as believers. There aren’t step-by-step programs of building ourselves up or any sort of exercises to help us focus primarily on a specific task. Instead, Christianity is a faith that is built on ordinary means of grace – the Bible, prayer, and the ordinances of the Church. If we add to or take away from these ordained means, we are playing God and being disobedient.

Spiritually Fed

So, then, what does it mean to eat the bread of life? Jeremiah’s posture in his book clarifies this question for all of us.

“Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart” (Jeremiah 15:16).

Do you see where our heart’s alignment is to be? It is a constant delighting in the truth that we are God’s and He is ours, and there is nothing that can separate us from this delight. Jeremiah understood that the posture of our hearts is to be upright and for our minds to be craving the truth of the Word of God because it is his truth that becomes our joy and our heart’s delight.

Conclusion

You may be in a mild state of starvation, or you may not even understand the true nature of your own lack of nourishment. Today is the day to begin feeding yourself from the Word of God that will never let you go hungry again. Today is the day to start immersing yourself in the truth that is eternal. Today is the day for you to commit yourself to discipline for the purpose of godliness (1 Tim. 4:7). Today.
