I know, I know. I’m not sure if Spurgeon-esque is a word either.

The word may not be a real word, or it might be. However, Spurgeon – often called the Prince of Preachers – had great things to say regarding the Christian life. His sermons brought the Bible to life for so many in the late 1800s in England. His writing and teaching were influential to many in the 19th century, and it is still influencing us today – I am no exception.

I have many *favorite* quotes and sermons of Spurgeon’s work and sermons. His Lectures to My Students is one of the best works on pastoral ministry I’ve ever read. His works and sermons on suffering and depression – something very near to his circumstances in life – are very helpful to many in their times of weakness and vulnerability. However, I find this one quote of his the most challenging:

Scripture has many things to say about the Word of God being ever-present in our lives (Ps. 119; Col. 3) and it is important, as we progress through the coming year, that we make it a priority in our lives. The world in which we live is not getting “more Christian.” In fact, the opposite is happening. Therefore, we must be equipped and ready for whatever is thrown our way.

The new year is fast approaching us (tomorrow, actually) and it will be a time of renewal and resolution for many people. But sometimes I find myself thinking about this quote and want to challenge all of us to, as Spurgeon so correctly said, “Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.”
